It is a fleshy, branched, creeping, yellow-green rhizome that can be up to 50 cm long and about 3 cm thick. The rhizome is white when cut and the flesh is spongy. Its use has been known in Eastern medicine for over 2,000 years - it has been used for stomach and digestive complaints, and chewed by some tribes to achieve meditative states. During the Depression it was used in the British Isles as a chewable substitute for tobacco. In today's phytotherapy, calamus is used to support and normalise digestive functions and is used for general refreshment of the body. The provisions of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council on nutrition and health claims do not allow us to inform you about other effects of this herb on your body. Please consult freely available sources or the herbarium for information on its effects. Traditional Uses: One tablespoon of the dried root is macerated overnight in 250 ml of cold water - divide the macerate thus prepared into two doses, one to be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and the other in the afternoon. Decoction: pour 250 ml of cold water over one teaspoon and immediately set aside after bringing to the boil. Drain and take 2 times a day on an empty stomach.
